The greatest need of our time is to clean out the enormous mass of mental and emotional rubbish that clutters our minds and makes of all political and social life a mass illness. Without this housecleaning, we cannot begin to see. Unless we see, we cannot think.

Thomas Merton

I find it hard to disagree with Merton. We’re so impossibly bogged down by the weight of many lifetimes of societal decisions and bandaid solutions that our ability to actually consider, let alone truly see anything that would get us collectively out of the mess we’re in. Basic human needs, work, the environment, technology… it’s all the same. And it seems the faster everything moves, the more rubbish we’re accumulating.

This dovetails into something that’s been on my mind for some time. I’ll have more to say about that soon.
