  • You know how it goes, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Google is now proving that by announcing that they’ll be soon charging legacy G Suite users. See ya Google.
  • I’m still trying to figure out what to make of the latest round of funding and VC-fueled growth for 1Password, but after more than a decade using their products with confidence, I don’t think there’s any need to panic.
  • Not unrelated, but this idea of a Perpetual-Purpose Trust model of a business is very interesting. I suspect most businesses based on or driven by the claim of some social mission tend to lose their grip on that over time.
  • I hope Moon Knight turns out to be as anxiety-inducing as the trailer hints at. I’m here for Oscar Isaac either way.
  • Moxie Marlinspike's take on the current web3/crypto trend (or whatever it is) seems balanced and quite fair to me. Most of what I think so far of all of this myself is: meh, already seems way too complicated so no thanks.
  • 10 Lessons in Productivity and Brainstorming from the Beatles. Better yet, just go watch Let It Be on HBO. It’s long, but astoundingly good.
  • Rob’s reached a high level of nerdiness with his quarterly Plus Equals algorithmic art zine and I’m all in. Just needs a print edition now, ahem.
  • “Guard the margins” is easily the best little aphorism I’ve heard in a long time. It’s a genuinely useful idea too.
  • It's funny because it's true.

Notable Type Releases

  • Very Cool Studio has updated all their Trial fonts beyond their original kerning-less state to instead be the real deal just with “Trial” added to the font names. Of course, not ok to use for commercial purposes without a license, so use responsibly. Nudge appears to have somehow slipped past me until now.
  • Speaking of weird, Valvolina from Device Fonts (aka Rian Hughes) fits the bill. Geometry. Hieroglyphs. Italian Futurism. Not new, but caught my eye this week.
  • For the right project, Fenotype’s new Tomato Ketchup looks like a winner. Maybe it’s age but I increasingly find myself charmed by these Cooper Black-esque revivals.
  • Out of the Dark’s new Cosplay is weird. Good weird. Nouveau structure and 1970s stoner vibes rolled into one.
  • Kristal from Bold Monday — sharp as a tack. So much in this family that’s really fantastic — those italics and ornaments though, so good.
  • VTC Ruby from Vocal Type, a worthy and important revival and one where the history behind the typeface is absolutely required reading.
