Canada Type: The Specimens

By Patrick Griffith

Canada Type’s rigorous manufacturing and testing program includes a type classification system for the 21st century that throws off the weighty shackles of Didone and her randy brothers. Sophisticated algorithms sort glyphs along three axes: HEADSPACE, REDSPACE, and ZEDSPACE. Each is a continuum between two magnetic opposites. Altogether, they are something like a focus group with a free bar, but nowhere to sit down.

Of course, since no letter is neutral-despite centuries of effort-no font can actually occupy the central coordinates 0, 0, o (just as no human can stand at the centre of the planet).
